Hi everyone,

Pretty much everything is in the title. How much are fresh associates looking at in terms of salary and bonus at funds in Toronto after a classic analyst stint? Any answer welcome regardless of fund size/tier but please specify MM, MF etc.

In-House Valuation Groups Inside PE Firms

$

I have seen linkedin's of some people who are specifically within the "Valuations" group of PE arm of megafunds like Blackstone and Apollo Global Management. They tend to come from FLDP/big 4 valuation/non-target backgrounds, which seem to make such a role within reach for me.

Can anyone here tell me more about the valuation groups within PE firms? What kind of skills does one develop there, and what kind of valuations are they performing, that they need specialized people for instead of the PE generalists that are hired from top Ivies? I'm guessing that the in-house valuations people are not running/executing the deals or doing the complex LBOs, and more like what typical big 4 valuation groups do (PPAs, but in-house?). And what are their comps/exit opps?

It kind of seems like a great way to break into PE later on as well.

Technical Question: Cash-on-Cash Return LBO model 1st year

Hi,

sorry to start with a dumb question - I am a consultant trying to break into PE and currently working on my LBO modelling.

So got a running model, balance sheet balances, so far so good. Now something that I find slightly counter intuitive.
When calculating my cash-on-cash returns after year 1, I encounter the issue that they are very often below 1 (like 0.6x) even for higher EBITDA multiples compared to the initial valuation I used. I am making a mistake here or is that normal for year 1 cash-on-cash returns?

Thanks a lot for the help!

Put yourself in my shoes (BIG 4 TS)

Hello Everybody,

I am a few years into my stint with BIG 4 TS group in a large SE market. I am at the point in my career here where I feel as if I need to make a move. My question for the group is:

What would you do if you were me? Try to break into some form of banking (corporate, IB, etc.), go do Corp. Dev., FP&A or PE? How soon would you try to leave and what avenues would you exploit to do so?

Thanks!

Big Announcement: WSO Private Equity Official Resume Template for Experienced Professionals with Deal Experience is Now Public!:

We're hoping this clean format gives you an even bigger edge in recruiting (besides being members of WSO :-). Also, don't forget that our private equity interview prep guide is now available after years in the making (here)!

As I mentioned earlier in the week when we released the investment banking resume template for undergraduates, we think the WSO templates give you a lot more flexibility on spacing. It's tough to condense all of your deal experience into a coherent summary, so we hope this is helpful (keep an eye out for the Private Equity Interview Prep Pack which we expect to have a beta version released by the end of February 2014)

This is the PE resume template we use in all of our the WSO resume reviews with experienced buyside professionals.

This particular banking resume sample is for experienced hires, not undergraduates. You should also not take these bullets since they just being used as placeholders / examples and aren't that strong...

Tanking a Small Cap Company private ($ Rev. ~$50m-$80m)

Hi Everyone,
I am preparing a list of potential targets for two PE funds. One is a new small-cap fund, currently fundraising and investing own equity the second one is a third fund investing out if $130m. I identified several interesting targets that are respectively in the size scope of these companies. However, these companies are public. Only a minority of their shares are respectively listed and these are low volume stocks. How much hustle would it be for the PE funds to take them private? Do you believe any of this funds would actually consider such targets? Thanks a lot in advance!

Transitioning from Corporate Accounting in Financial Services to Investment Analysis

$

Currently I'm a revenue accountant/analyst for a broker dealer handling advisory revenue, and revenue share on annuities. Im a Level 2 CFA candidate and have passed Level 1 of the CAIA program. On the side I'm involved in handling funds of hedge funds that are winding down and I find it fascinating. I want very badly to eventually make it into alternative investment analysis, preferably private equity, LBOs, hedge funds, or high net worth portfolio management. I know this is a difficult uphill battle, but nonetheless its what i want to pursue. My recruiter says she can put me in front of corporate financial analyst positions for a REIT and a high net worth portfolio management company. Being that I'm an accountant/analyst I am wasting time not building experience in analysis. Should I hold out for an entry level position in investment analysis, such as real estate anlysis, investment banking, etc, or should I be jumping at the opportunities she's presented with the hope of internally transferring? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated on how to go about my search.

Kind Regards

Switch from financial due diligence to PE

Hi,

I am very keen to switch from my current role in TS (London office) to a front-office role in a PE firm.
I have two years of deal experience mainly in the financial services space (various sell-side and buy-side work for banks, Asset Management companies, insurance companies and fintech).

I would like to seek opinion on whether obtaining an MBA from a M7 will make the change from financial DD to PE role much more easier/viable.

Took my GMAT and scored a competitive 700 and my undergrad degree is a first-class from a UK university.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any decent industry report database that charges based on an annual subscription instead of the number of reports downloaded. It is difficult to find data such as growth rates on certain industries and it would be good to have more information before making GLG calls.

Thanks a lot and will give SB+.

First year compensation at small/mid MM firms?

$

Quick question for those who work(ed) for or received offers from small-to-mid-size MM funds (which I'm defining as roughly $300M - $1B AUM): do you mind sharing your 1st year Associate compensation (ideally broken out by base + bonus)? Have an offer from a fund in this size range but can't quite gauge whether it's competitive or not. Any responses would be appreciated!
